The Hills are Alive with the Sound of.....Rain!

We left the Alps and travelled to our first Austrian destination, Salzburg. It was an overcast drizzly day, but the city was still beautiful. We didn't see Julie Andrews or the Baron, but Jen did have an encounter with a sketchy man in one of the main squares.

From Salzburg we took our delayed train to Vienna. Le sigh, that wouldn't happen in Germany! We've spent a day so far in Vienna and it's been apparent that it's beautiful, but it's been hard to enjoy the city because of the constant rain and overall shite weather. Toms + Sanuks + rain = wet + cold feet...miserable. At the end of the day my feet looked like I had soaked them in a bath for too long.

Appart from the usual sightseeing and museum/gallery hopping we had lunch at the UN building (I didn't even realize that they had headquarters in Vienna). We were the private guests of Jen's friend, Mary, who works in the IT department. We dined at the cafeteria on a hearty AND cheap lunch....a rarity so far. Mary was kind enough to give us a tour of the building too.

We also checked out the Central Cemetary, which is a popular tourist spot since it has the graves of many famous folk such as Beethoven and Bach, but there was no one there today on account of the weather. It was unerving to walk around in this huge empty cemetary whilst it was overcast, raining, and muddy......creepy, but beautiful cemetary.

Our hostel is full of tres young people. I was asking the guy that works at the front desk about buses, when the neighbour of the hostel phoned complaining about the noise. Apparently this happens every night and eventually the neighbours start throwing apples and tomatoes at the young hoodlums loittering outside!
